| At the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) workshop on July 26, 2007, architects and engineers involved in Candler's project concluded that it is on track to achieve a silver rating, Emory University's target for its building projects. The U.S. Green Building Council defines its LEED program as one that "promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality." Construction work is on schedule, in spite of recent rains in Atlanta. Utilities are still being re-routed and inactive lines removed. Shoring is in place now, and the large drill that can be seen just behind Bishops Hall will be used to drill 53 caisons/shafts down to bedrock (in fact, 6" into bedrock)--anticipated to be ca. 30' below grade--to secure the foundations of the new building. posted by Pat Graham at 7:58 PM 0 comments |
Grading, tree removal, utilities location, and other work is well underway on the building site. The large oak in the middle of the parking lot was taken down on Thursday and the main trunk placed in storage for future use by Candler. posted by Pat Graham at 5:02 AM 0 comments |
| At a recent meeting, Campus Planning provided additional information about planning for the security systems to be installed in Candler's new buildings. Some of the key points that emerged were: 1. Emory University has engaged M.C. Dean (https://webmail.service.emory.edu/horde/services/go.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mcdean.com%2Findex.htm) to help it develop a campus security masterplan. September 30, 2007 is the anticipated completion date for this process. 2. M.C. Dean personnel are already involved in the installation of security systems in several Emory locations and have now begun to analyze the requirements of the plans drawn by Candler's architects. 3. Candler's building program will include a robust combination of surveillance cameras, motion detectors, card access electronic locks, and fire detection equipment. This comprehensive system will be connected to and monitored by Facilities Management and Emory Police. posted by Pat Graham at 1:37 PM 0 comments |
